Church selling rural Gibbon home for $1
Buyer must
GIBBON — A rural Gibbon house that formerly was used by St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Schoolteachers is for sale for $1.
The property sale includes the understanding that the turn of the century, four-bedroom, two-bathroom house must be moved by the buyer’s expense from church property six miles north of Gibbon.
“The house has been updated and additions have been attached to it over the years,” said Rev. Karl M. Grant. “The house has not been occupied for about 10 years.”
Grant said the grade school in front of the house closed in 2019 after 100 years of operation.
“We’re in a new lifecycle as a church, not operating the school or housing teachers anymore. But we don’t want the building to go to waste,” said Grant. “Somebody interested in history or just wants to have the property is welcome to it.”
Grant said the house was used like a boarding house by teachers for many years with shared living areas.
“Somebody may be able to gut the structure and use the floor plan. The lumber the house was built with is not like lumber commonly used for building homes now,” he added.
“If we don’t sell the house, our alternatives are using it for a practice burn by the local fire department,” said Grant.
He said the home sale was advertised for several years at the annual January church sausage dinner.
“We have 600 to 700 people come through. We had a few people interested, but it just turned out they chose to build new instead of renovating this,” Grant said. “One of our congregation members lives up the road in her former grade school.”
“We thought before we turn it over to the fire department, lets try to sell it,” said Grant. “I think there’s somebody out there interested in the history of the house. It’s a good head start on a home anyway.”
The house includes recent vinyl siding, new windows and stone basement walls.
“I believe a home was recently moved onto a basement nearby, north of Gibbon,” Grant said.
“We’d like to sell it as soon as possible. If someone wants it, we hope they contact us soon,”
The house at 6385 240th Street, Gibbon can be seen by contacting Grant at 507-834-6676. Email splcgibbonpastor@gmail.com.
