NEW ULM — The Knights of Columbus St. Patrick’s Council 1076 in New Ulm recently received the top community projects award in Minnesota.

Three years ago, Dennis Schwarz and Cornelius Ezeiloaku created Care4Nigeria and began sending containers to aid the less fortunate. The first shipping container sent to Nigeria helped start a seminary music department, bicycle shop, sewing and cement mixing businesses and clothed orphans and newborns.

Two 40-foot sea containers sent in 2021 included medical equipment from New Ulm Medical Center, Sleepy Eye Medical Center and New Ulm Disabled American Veterans. Items sent that were formerly used in hospitals included hospital beds, stretchers, more than 100 wheelchairs, three anesthesia machines, walkers and canes plus commercial table saws and other power tools.

A second container included items formerly used in churches such as pews, organs, altars, and statues. In addition, six power wheelchairs, more than 150 bicycles, 30 pianos plus clothes, generators, power and hand tools.
