Zine printer is next artist-in-resident at The Grand

Evanson

This week, The Grand welcomes our 4th artist-in-resident, Sarah Evenson, who will be at The Grand from April 10-30.

Sarah (they/them/theirs) is a queer, transgender interdisciplinary printmaker/zinemaker/bookmaker/writer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since earning their BFA in printmaking from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2016, Evenson has led an eclectic and varied career. In the last five years, Evenson has received many grants and opportunities to further their career and study of bookmaking.

During Evanson’s time as a resident at The Grand’s Cellar Press, they propose to create and distribute an edition of 100 letterpress printed single-sheet cut-and-fold zines on the subject of queer empowerment and community.

Upon completion of Sarah’s formal two-week residency, they will distribute the zines as takeaways at willing bookstores, arts spaces, and community centers around Brown County and the surrounding areas.

Rural areas and small towns are often overlooked as site of queer community and resistance, but LGBTQ people and their allies live all over the country, not just in city centers.

As a queer, trans person who was raised nonurban, Evenson knows how powerful a reminder of this fact can be to someone who may feel isolated by location and who may not always have reliable access to online resources.

Work of this nature, that intentionally steps aside from digital space to root viewers in the physical world while signaling a larger community, is especially poignant in these days following the socially isolated, video-chat oriented days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
