Park & Rec Report

Rec Center Pool Closures: Due to boiler system replacement at the Rec Center we will have intermittent closings this week. Tuesday, July 30 the entire building will be closed from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m, the pool and locker rooms will remain closed until 1:30 p.m. or until work is completed; there will be no open swim. Wednesday, July 31 the spa will be closed all day.

Monday Night Community Concert and National Night Out in German Park Monday, July 29, starting at 5:30 p.m. This is a night of family fun, including Rec on the Go, Puppet Wagon and other activities and food. Music entertainment will be the Schell’s Hobo Band.!

July is National Park and Rec month! This year’s theme is Game On! We are challenging individuals to submit a digital photo playing at one of our parks or facilities throughout the month of July. This is your last chance to enter the final weekly photo contest for a chance to win Chamber Dollars, now through July 29 of your Best Nature or Structure Shot! Photos must be emailed to lizm@newulmmn.gov by the last date of the contest. Only one photo can be submitted per person each week and must be 5 megabytes or smaller in .jpg format and be at least 1,600 pixels. Tot Swim is held the first and third Fridays of the month; the next one is Friday, Aug. 2. This is an opportunity to Swim and play with your tot in the shallow part of the pool. Toys are provided and tot slide will be open. Whirlpool is closed during this time. Admission is $2.75/tot.

Hermann Swim Club will run July 30 through Aug. 15. Participants will have the opportunity to improve swim strokes, build muscle, speed, strength and improve endurance. Participants must have passed Level 4 swim lessons and be at least 8 years old. Register online or at the Rec Center.

Youth Pickleball Camps will be offered throughout the summer for ages 8-13 at the Lincoln Park Courts, 718 S. State St. The camp will focus on teaching basic rules, etiquette, teamwork, movement and great socialization that comes with playing this unique and addicting sport. Players will be split into groups according to skill and age. The next camp offered Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lincoln Park. Register online or at the Rec Center.

Wow Zone, Mankato Summer Field Trip offered Friday, Aug. 9 from 12 to 4 p.m. where you can bowl, play mini golf and laser tag. Fees are $20 for residents or $22 for non-residents; cost includes transportation and admission. Register at the Rec Center or online.

Get to Know Nature Camp – Wild about Wildlife People eat wild edibles for a number of reasons, including a legitimate way of economizing food costs, excellent source of vitamins and minerals and in rare situations, they can be essential for survival. Class offered Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Riverside Environmental Learning Center for just $5! Register at the Rec Center or online.

Lifeguard Training Class will be offered Aug. 14-17. Participants must be 15 years old by the last class date to register. Completion of pre-course physical fitness test of 300-yard swim (6 laps) using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes with no hands, retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7 to 10 feet of water, swim 20 yards back to side of pool, get out of pool without using a ladder or stairs within 1 minute and 40 seconds in order to proceed with the course. There will be 3 final skill scenarios to successfully complete certification and written exam that requires a score of 80 percent or higher. This is a blended learning class with 5 to 7 hours of online work to be completed before the start of class. Register online or at the Rec Center by Friday, Aug. 9.

Summer Day of Play Thursday, Aug. 15 in German Park. The fun starts at 6 p.m.! Save the date!

Outdoor Wading Pools are daily from 12:30-6:30 p.m. Children must be with an adult of at least 18. There is NO lifeguard on duty. Air temp must be a minimum of 72 degrees to open and will close for strong winds, heavy downpours or lightening.

Rec on Go travels to neighborhoods or parks where staff set up activities and equipment for youth and teens. Healthy Snacks provided to youth 18 and under. Be sure to check it out at the park or at National Night out this week! Please refer to the Park and Rec Summer Brochure or our website for the weekly schedule. This is a FREE program, brought to you by Allina Health and Community Education.

Riverside Environmental Learning Center located in Riverside Park is open Thursdays and Fridays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays 1 to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Please call Ron at 507-766-5770 to make arrangements for other times.

Open Pickleball at Rec Center Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1-2:30 p.m. Memberships, Punch cards, cards or Daily Admission apply. Outdoor pickleball courts are open.

Minnecon Park is closed until further notice due to high MN River levels.

Hermann Monument open daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission $3 per person. Ages 5 and under free with adult.

German Park Amphitheater is in great need of improvement! Fundraising for this project continues. Any size of donation is accepted and greatly appreciated for the community venue. Checks can be made to the City of New Ulm and mailed to the Park and Rec. Dept., 122 S. Garden Street, New Ulm.
