Buckthorn Removal Tips – The month of November is the easiest time of year to identify buckthorn. While most leaves have fallen, buckthorn leaves are still fresh and green. The leaves are egg shaped and have 3 pairs of widely spaced veins that end at the top of the leaf. The trunk of a buckthorn plant has spikes. The sure way to identify buckthorn is to shave off the thin back and find bright orange. Cut down to as close 1 ½ inch to ground as possible and apply concentrated purple Roundup on one-half inch around the rim within two hours. Cut only what you have time to treat. Use the herbicide, Mark It, (available at Rec Center or online) or buy a small bottle of pond dye. These dyes will not fade for at least a year. Dispose of buckthorn that has berries by taking it to the burn pile or bury it. Do not let buckthorn lie around, as new buckthorn will grow around and between it , making new sprouts hard to get at.

Open Broomball Wed-nesdays through Feb. 28 from 7:15-8:45 p.m. at the Civic Center. This non-checking league is open to men and women, ages 18 and older. Players may divide into teams for a fun, competitive and challenging game play. Helmets, broomball stick/broom and shoes are required. Shin guards and gloves are recommended. Park and Rec has limited equipment available on a first come-first serve basis.
