Missouri man convicted of killing four

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — Jurors convicted a St.

Louis man of murder Friday in the 2018 shooting of his

girlfriend, her two children and her mother. A St. Charles

County jury deliberated less than two hours before finding

Richard Darren Emery, 50, guilty of four counts of

first-degree murder. Sentencing is scheduled for Saturday.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, the St. Louis

Post-Dispatch reported. Emery was accused of killing K

ate Kasten, 39, during a Dec. 28, 2018 shooting.

Some say monkeypox elimination unlikely

NEW YORK (AP) — Some U.S. health officials are

conceding that monkeypox is probably not going away

anytime soon. The disease’s spread is slowing but the

virus is so widespread that elimination is unlikely, the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. That

conclusion was in a recent CDC report, and echoed Friday

by Marc Lipsitch, director of science in the agency’s

disease-forecasting center. Lipsitch hesitated to say

monkeypox is permanently here to stay, but he said it

stands to be a continuing threat for the next few years.

Biden signs bill to avert shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden signed

into law Friday a bill that finances the federal government

through mid-December and provides another infusion

of military and economic aid to Ukraine after

lawmakers acted to avert a partial government shutdown

set to begin after midnight. The bill passed the House

by a vote of 230-201 earlier in the day. Republicans

overwhelmingly opposed the measure. Some wanted to

extend government funding into January when, based on

the results of the midterm elections, it’s possible they’ll

have more leverage over setting federal spending for the

full fiscal year. Others argued the measure needed to do

more to address border security.

Nev. governor orders prison head to resign

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The head of Nevada’s Department

of Corrections has resigned at the request of Gov.

Steve Sisolak in the wake of an escape by a convicted

bombmaker that went unnoticed for four days. Sisolak “requested

and received Nevada Department of Corrections

Director Charles Daniels’ resignation, effective immediately,”

the governor’s office said in a statement Friday. Six

other officers were placed on administrative leave. Porfirio

Duarte-Herrera, 42, escaped from the Southern Desert

Correctional Center outside Las Vegas on Sept. 23 without

anyone noticing for four days, before a tip led to his capture

at a transit center in Las Vegas on Wednesday night as he

prepared to board a bus out of town.
