NEW ULM — Spins, twizzles and wicked fun will soon grace the ice at the New Ulm Civic Center as the New Ulm Figure Skating Club (NUFSC) performs “Oz on Ice.”

“Oz on Ice” will be sponsored by Meidl Concrete Services and take place March 7 and 8 at the New Ulm Civic Center, with two showings on March 7 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. and one on March 8 at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale online at www.eventbrite.com/e/oz-on-ice-tickets-1980491249641 or can be purchased at the New Ulm Hy-Vee for two dollars off per ticket. Tickets at the door are $7 per children ages 5-17 and $12 per adult.

The shows will be around two hours long, with a 20-minute intermission during each show.

Katrina Berbrich will be directing her sixth ice show this year and is excited to tell the story of “The Wizard of Oz.”

“When I’m picking the ice show theme, I’m thinking of what would be fun for all age groups,” Berbrich said. “‘The Wizard of Oz’ is one of those stories that is so timeless that I’ve had in the back of my mind — probably since the first time I directed that I [thought] I’d like to do some day. So this was the year that I decided to do it, especially with all the hype around ‘Wicked.’

“We’re so excited to feature a ‘Wicked’ production theme in the middle of our performance, too, so it just felt like the right time for it. We love the story and so many kids are so excited about all the little characters they get to play.”

“The Wizard of Oz” tells the story of a farm girl from Kansas named Dorothy, who is carried away by a tornado with her dog Toto and ends up in the beautiful land of the Munchkins. Dorothy’s journey to get back to her home involves finding the Great Wizard Oz, who may help her return. Along her journey to find Oz, she is joined by the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion and must also fend off the Wicked Witch of the West, who is looking to steal her magical slippers.

What started as “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” a novel by L. Frank Baum in 1900, the story became a 1939 musical fantasy film by the name of “The Wizard of Oz.” Most recently, the story has been reimagined with the musical and film “Wicked.”

For 14-year-old Keira McCabe, this will be her 10th ice show and she will tackle the role of Dorothy.

“I am super excited,” McCabe said. “This has been one of my favorite movies for a long time and I’m just super excited to be with all my friends.”

Toto will be played by a Bichon Shih Tzu named Duke.

McCabe said she believed she would do well in the role of Dorothy and it was a part she really wanted.

“I was pretty confident after my performance with our tryouts,” McCabe said. “I thought my program was really nice and flowy, so I was really comfortable.”

The Wicked Witch will be played by Sage Boyle, who has been in ice shows since she was 3 and will be participating in her 15th this year.

Boyle said when she heard of this year’s theme, she knew she wanted to be the Wicked Witch.

“I just love the story of the Wicked Witch,” Boyle said. “‘Wicked’ was really good, and that’s what inspired me the most, I think. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is also fantastic.”

Boyle said this year’s show is a great way to bring people of all ages together for a fun time.

“It’s for everyone, people of all ages,” Boyle said. “I feel like everyone has seen it, heard of it or watched some [adaption] of some sort. So that’s what I love about it, too. It’s for everyone.”

Berbrich said the rehearsals for the show started the first week in January this year, but her trios, duets and soloists did tryouts last October, getting to work even earlier.

Boyle, Cali Frederickson and Miranda are three senior skaters in the show this year, while the show will feature around 75 skaters.

The show will tell the entire story and feature iconic songs like “Over the Rainbow,” “The Merry Old Land of Oz,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” and “If I Only Had a Heart.”

Berbrich said she’s also excited for some of the more special scenes during the show, such as the tornado.

“We have these girls with big black flags that are like giant sheets basically, and we have an actual funnel-like tornado that’s flying through,” she said. “The Wicked Witch goes through on her bike, we have cows flying, we’ve got a house spinning around. It is super cute.”

Berbrich said the skaters work extremely hard to put on a good show each year, but so do many others that show-goers won’t see on the ice.

“Our props committee works really hard on the props,” she said. “They’ve been working on the props for months. So we have all kinds of really fun things that are out on the ice like Dorothy’s house, the Witch’s castle, Emerald City, Munchkin houses, poppies. All kinds of really fun things are out there.

“But as a director, I can’t pull this whole thing off without my Ice Show committee. They do a lot of leg work, making everything that you can’t see run that needs to run for this to be the production that it is.”

Boyle invited the general public to check out the ice show this year, calling it a performance that features everything and more.

“It’s a performance of talent and acting and figure skating,” Boyle said. “So if that is an interest on top of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Wicked,’ this is everything and more.”

Starting at $4.50/week.
