June and July Book Clubs

Off the Shelf

A few months ago, I shared some recent book club picks. As you gear up for your summer activities, why not try something new or enjoy a book in a new way? Check out one of our book clubs to just listen, socialize, or share your thoughts about a book. The library tries to make multiple copies available for check out, so you don’t have to try to purchase or find your own copy. Here are our upcoming selections for June and July for our three book clubs sponsored by the library.

Our Lit Wits Book Club usually meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Their June selection, which we’ll be discussing next Monday, is Pam Houston’s memoir, Deep Creek. Pam reflects on life and lessons learned on her ranch in the mountains of Colorado including death, grieving, hardship, endurance, gratitude and more shared with personal anecdotes and essays. Their July selection is Poster Girl by Veronica Roth. Set in a dystopian future where a megalopolis spans from Seattle to Portland, Sonya Kantor has been the poster child for the ruling class’s policies. When the ruling class is toppled and Sonya spends ten years in prison, she questions everything she thinks she knows.

Our History Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 12:00 p.m. Their June selection is David Gibbins’ The History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks. David leads us through twelve fascinating underwater wrecks that capture moments in time to talk about the people and places that made them set sail. Their July Selection is Questlove’s Hip-hop is History. Musician and producer Questlove shares fascinating insights into the evolution of hip-hop over the decades and how the music of hip-hop reflects the society and culture where it is found.

Our Mystery Book Club usually meets on the last Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Their June selection is A Game of Lies by Clare Mackintosh. Seven people with deep secrets are stranded in the Welsh mountains as contestants on a reality show. If another contestant guesses their secret, they’ll be exposed on live television, but some people will kill to keep their secrets. Their July selection is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. Chinese grandmother and tea shop owner Vera Wong wakes up one morning to find a dead man in the middle of her shop. Determined to solve the crime, Vera uses her listening, networking, and snooping skills to try to catch a killer.

We hope you’ll join us for one of our upcoming book club meetings. You could also just enjoy the book on your own too. We hope you have a safe and happy summer!
