The open road is calling!
Off the Shelf
School days are soon coming to an end and summer vacation plans have begun. Are you thinking about an epic road trip this summer? I have some road trip books for you to check out.
Experience the beauty of Minnesota by taking a drive with “Scenic Driving Minnesota: Including Lake Superior’s North Shore, Itasca State Park, and Minneapolis Lakes” by Phil Davies (917.7604 Davies). It includes beautiful photos and full-color maps. As long as you are touring Minnesota, you might as well take “Waterfalls of Minnesota” by Lisa Crayford (917.76 Crayfor) along with you. It is arranged nicely by regions of the state complete with a map.
Next up are our neighbors to the east in Wisconsin. “Wisconsin State Parks, Forests and Recreation Areas: A Ranger’s Guide” by James Buchholz (917.7505 Buchhol) will walk you through the many state parks and public areas of Wisconsin. Each park listing has Ranger tips, trivia and notes with little tidbits of insider information.
Don’t miss “Beer, Brats, and Cheese: A Wisconsin Road Trip” by Heather Kerrigan (917.7504 Kerriga). If you are honest, these three things are probably what you are looking forward to the most when visiting Wisconsin! You can’t go wrong with this guide pointing you to all the best places to find Wisconsin’s signature dishes.
“Fodor’s: The Black Hills of South Dakota” (917.839 Fodors 2024) continues our journey of visiting our next-door neighbors. I really enjoy visiting the Black Hills. The scenery is spectacular. You don’t want to miss the Needles Highway! You will probably see a buffalo or two, and if you love western history, you are all set. Be sure to make time for the famous faces!
If you are planning to head further west, take along “Best Road Trips Pacific Northwest: Escapes on the Open Road” by Lonely Planet (917.9 Ohlsen). You can choose the length of trip that works best for you, anywhere from a daytrip to several weeks on the road. It lists thirty-two attractions with a few pages dedicated to listing important tips and information for each area. It is a beautiful guide!
The next two are travel guides that cover the whole United States. They are jam-packed with information. If they sound interesting, be sure to put a hold on them; I think they will be popular this summer. They are the Moon Guide “Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways” by Jamie Jensen (917.304 Road 2024) and “USA’s National Parks” by Lonely Planet (917.304 USAs 2024).
One of the best things about a road trip is trying different kinds of food! So take a look at “50 States 1000 Eats: Where to Go, When to Go, What to Eat, What to Drink” by Joe Yogerst (917.304 Yogerst) before you go.
