Celebrate today

Off the Shelf

There is a celebration for every day of the year if you are looking for something to celebrate. I hope the daily celebrations for the upcoming week make you smile or maybe facilitate a trip to the library to look for a book to help you celebrate the day in style.

Sun. Oct. 1 International Coffee Day and National Homemade Cookie Day. What could be better than a homemade cookie and a cup of coffee on a Sunday? A couple of titles to help are “The New Rules of Coffee: A Modern Guide for Everyone” by Jordan Michelman (641.3373 Michelm) and “Fabulous Modern Cookies: Lessons in Better Baking for Next Generation Treats” by Chris Taylor (641.8654 Taylor).

Mon. Oct. 2 World Farm Animals Day. “A Chicken in Every Yard: The Urban Farm Store’s Guide to Chicken Keeping” by Robert & Hannah Litt (636.5 Litt). If you are thinking about raising chickens, this book answers the questions you have and maybe a few you haven’t thought of yet.

Tue. Oct. 3 National Fruit at Work Day. “Apple: Recipes from the Orchard” by James Rich (641.6411 Rich). Perfect for October! There are so many ways to enjoy apples. Make an apple recipe and share with your coworkers.

Wed. Oct. 4 National Kale Day. “How to Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food” by Mark Bittman (641.5 Bittman). It contains 9 recipes to cook Kale! I bet you will also learn to cook something else once you take a look at this wonderful cookbook.

Thur. Oct 5 Random Acts of Poetry Day. Check out “Winds of Change” by local poet Stephen J. Vescelus (811.008 Vescelus) or you could write an original poem and give it to someone!

Fri. Oct. 6 National German-American Day. This may be celebrated every day in New Ulm! A couple of books edited by Clarence A. Glasrud may be of interest when exploring the history of German-Americans. “A Heritage Fulfilled: German-Americans = Die erfüllte Herkunft”(977.6 Heritag). “A Heritage Deferred: The German-Americans in Minnesota” (977.6 Heritag). Stop in and browse 977 in the nonfiction area for many more books to celebrate German heritage.

Sat. Oct. 7 Frugal Fun Day. “Little House Living: The Make-Your-Own Guide to a Frugal, Simple and Self-Sufficient Life” by Merissa Alink (640 Alink). You could also check out something from our Library of Things collection, you can’t get more frugal than that. Check out a guitar and learn how to play or maybe some snowshoes when winter makes an appearance. It’s free! You can see the list of items in our Library of Things collection on the library website by clicking on library catalog -> Library of Things.
