Periodicals at the library

Off the Shelf

You may have noticed that your magazine subscriptions are changing. Some are no longer being published in print form and are only available digitally and others have changed their subscription schedules by publishing fewer issues per year. This has, of course, affected the library’s subscriptions as well. But, we still have thirty-one magazines available for you to check out including a new one this month, Magnolia Journal. We have the latest issue of each magazine near the public computer area for you to browse. Once the newest issue comes we barcode the older one and it is available for checkout. Magazines check out for three weeks just like books. You will find the back issues of our magazines upstairs in the nonfiction area near the Fred Johnson room.

We have newspapers! The current day’s issue of the New Ulm Journal, Mankato Free Press and Star Tribune are available near the computers as well. As with the magazines, the back issues are also available for checkout. Don’t worry, the library also has the weekly editions of the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch, Hanska Herald, Springfield Advance-Press, Comfrey Times-Darfur Gazette, and The Land upstairs in the nonfiction area. Also of note, the library has the various versions of the New Ulm newspaper dating back to the 1800s starting with the New Ulm Pionier in 1858. Our historical newspapers are available on microfilm, although we do have a select few in print. Please ask at the service desk if you would like to access the historical newspapers and we would be happy to help you.

We also have a collection of area school yearbooks that you can use in the library. We have yearbooks from New Ulm Public, Cathedral, Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Riverbend Area Learning Center. We don’t have a complete collection of yearbooks, so if you are looking for specific ones, you can search the card catalog by the name of the school or contact us and we will see if we have a copy.
