Park & Rec Report

Rec Center Fitness Center and two racquetball courts are open! All other portions of the building remain closed until sometime in Sept.. Limited hours are Monday through Thursday 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to noon and Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additional hours will be added when the rest of the building can open. 24/7 access will be available eventually as well. Everyone must check in at the Welcome desk. Bring your own water bottle.

Civic Center is open for skating and open hockey. Check the website for dates/times.

Community Concert series – German Park This week’s entertainment will be by the Worst Band Ever Aug. 23 and the Teddy Bear Band Aug. 30. Concerts are free and open to the public. Performances every Monday at 7 p.m. Listen to KNUJ 860 or check our Facebook Page, New Ulm Park and Recreation for weather announcements.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course is being offered as a blended learning class Sunday, Aug. 22 from 5-7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Aug. 23-26 from 4-8:30 p.m. Approximately 5-7 hours of online work is required prior to class, followed by approximately 20 hours of in person training in our new pool. Register online at newulmmn.gov. Registration deadline is Monday, Aug. 16. Participants must be 15 years old by the last class date to register and successfully pass a pre-course physical fitness test of 300-yard swim (6 laps) using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes with no hands and be able to retrieve a 10 lb. brick from 7-10 feet of water, swim 20 yards back to side of pool, get out of pool without using a ladder or stairs within 1 minute and 40 seconds in order to proceed with the course. There will be 3 final skill scenarios to successfully complete and a written exam that requires a score of 80 percent or higher. Upon success completion, a certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED will be issued/valid for 2 years. Fee: $199 Res. / $219 NR

Civic Center Garage Sale will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Register for your hassle-free space! Registration is available in-person only on Thursday, Aug. 12 from 7:30-11 a.m. at the Civic Center. No phone registrations will be accepted. Registration is available at the Rec Center after 1 p.m. on Aug. 12 if spots are still available.

Fall Program Brochure and registration is available Youth Flag Football for those in grades 1-5, as well as our newer program, Football Buddies, a parent/child program for 4-6yr olds. Youth Volleyball returns for those ages 8-11. Youth and Adult pottery classes will resume in Sept.. Registration available online at newulmmn.gov or in person at the Rec Center.

Splashpad at North Park is open daily 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. It may close for maintenance or severe weather.

Wading Pools at Washington and Lincoln Park are open 12:30- 6 p.m. through Sunday, Aug. 22.

Hermann Monument is open daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please follow COVID protocols in place for visiting the monument, including social distancing. Admission is $3 per person. For rentals outside of regular hours contact lizm@newulmmn.gov for rates and availability.

The Community Center – CAST Activities have resumed and the Center is open for activities and programming! Please call 354-3212 or email castnu@newulmtel.net with questions. Meals for shut ins and takeout available by calling 359-2243. Watch for congregate meals re-opening announcement soon.

Memorial/Gift Giving Ideas – purchase one or more paver stone(s) with your inscription(s), in the walkways near Hermann Monument and/or German Park for $200 each, contact the Park & Rec office at 359-8344. Park or trail benches range in price from $1,500 to $3,500 each, call 359-8344.

Riverside Environmental Learning Center is open Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 p.m.
