The 57 pupils of the public school grades here, who are 10 per cent or more underweight, will be supplied with half a pint of whole milk every school day from next Monday until the close of the present term, according to action taken by the board of education, at its adjourned monthly meeting, Tuesday evening, upon recommendation of a committee of the newly organized Parent-Teacher association. Those parents, who are financially able, will be asked to reimburse the school district for the milk supplied to their children, but needy pupils will receive their daily portion of lacteal fluid without expense to their parents.
Appropriate $100
After listening to the report submitted by the Parent-Teacher association committee, composed of Miss Ida Koch, Mrs. William B. Mather, Attorney Henry N. Somsen and Ed. C. Veeck, the board voted to appropriate a sum, not to exceed $100, for the purpose of inaugurating the milk distribution system and trying it out until school closes this spring. The amount was placed at the disposal of the committee. If satisfactory results are obtained, the innovation may be continued at the opening of the fall term; if not, it will be dropped.
Commencement Speaker.
Frank H. Gamel of Chicago, Ill., an experienced counselor of fathers and older boys, is the board of education’s choice for high school commencement speaker, this year. Superintendent F.B. Andreen was instructed to communicate with Mr. Gamel immediately and engage him for that occasion. Mr. Gamel has accomplished excellent results in his chosen work, while employed by some of the largest cities in the United States. He is highly recommended.
Miss Steele Elected.
Miss Martha Steele, who taught the fifth and sixth grades in the Lincoln school, last year, during Miss Lydia Schilling’s leave of absence, was, upon Superintendent Andreen’s recommendation, elected to succeed Miss Gertrude Hughes, instructor of the fifth grade, Emerson building, who declined re-election.
Treasurer H. F. Raabe, who with F.P. Zschunke represented the local board at the recent State School Board association convention in the Twin Cities, gave a brief report of the important matters that were discussed and disposed of during the sessions. .
