At the regular meeting of the city council Wednesday evening, a communication was read from the Western Union Telegraph Co., which conveyed the information that this company was arranging to place the telegraph wires underground from the right-of-way of the C. & N. W. to the up-town office on Second North street, in conformity with a request made by the city council some time ago.
Due to the fact that these wires will have to be placed under the Minnesota street paving, City Engineer F.D. Minium was instructed to prepare plans for a tunnel under the pavement, sufficiently large for future needs, and present it to the council at the meeting next Tuesday evening. The Telegraph Co. was given permission to proceed with the improvement.
Bill Boards and Electric Signs.
Councilor John G. Gronau asked if the buildings and grounds committee, to which the matter of bill boards within the city was referred, had investigated and were ready to report. After some discussion the matter of bill boards and electric light signs were referred to this committee together with the city attorney and city engineer. A report will likely be made at the meeting next Tuesday evening
Tree Trimming
and Radio Wires.
Fire Chief Fred. Pfaender brought up the matter of trimming the trees along the boulevards, as the low-hanging branches are a menace to the men, when the large hook and ladder truck is taken out. He was instructed to make a survey of the city and prevail upon the property owners to trim the trees to a desired height. If this was not done, he was instructed to report to the council. Mr. Pfaender also brought up the matter of radio aerials being hooked up to the electric light poles. After considerable discussion the council instructed Robt. Mullin, superintendent of the electric light and water works, to see that the aerials were removed from the electric light poles. They are dangerous when so attached. Plans and specifications were adopted for the heating extension on Minnesota street to the New Ulm Steam Laundry.
Ed. Hoffmann appeared before the council in reference to the unloading platform at the Sunlight Produce Co.’s plant. He was informed the concern promised that no unloading would be permitted between the hours of 9 o’clock in the evening and 6 o’clock in the morning, and that employees will park their cars in the rear of the plant and not on German Street.
A building permit was granted to Robt. Fesenmaier to erect an addition to the rear of his business block on Minnesota street. Several other permits were held in abeyance until a report of the fire chief could be obtained.
A total of 466.5 hours of hand labor and 250.5 hours of team labor was expended on the streets during the past month.
The votes at the annual city election Tuesday were canvassed and those, who received a majority of the votes cast for the several offices, were declared elected. The official returns are contained in another column of the Journal.
