Nick Metzen Barn Is Destroyed By Fire

Origin Of Fire Unknown.

Save All Livestock

From Flame

——–

Fire of mysterious origin destroyed the large modern barn on the farm of Nick Metzen in Cottonwood Township Monday morning about three o’clock. The last member of the family had retired about midnight and everything was all right at that time.

Save Livestock.

About three o’clock Mr. Metzen was aroused by the barking of the dog which was tied to the barn. Upon going to the door to see what the commotion was all about, Mr. Metzen saw the flames shooting from the roof of the barn. The dog had been tied to the barn and the sparks falling upon him caused him to whine and bark.

The barn housed three horses and a pony and six cows. Fortunately the owner was able to get all of the stock out of the barn. Hay, feed, harness and other properties which had been stored in the structure, were completely destroyed. Neighbors were soon on the scene of the fire but the flames had gained such headway it was impossible to do anything to save the barn, which measured 32 feet by 70 feet and damages will run to a high figure. Part of the loss is covered with insurance. The barn will be rebuilt as soon as possible.

Two Mysterious Fires.

This is the second fire which can not be accounted for. Some weeks ago, a party or parties, started a fire in the basement of the P. H. Furth home in that vicinity and because the house was closed up the fire did not get a start, due to the lack of oxygen in the rooms. Investigations are being made and it is possible that the guilty party or parties may be apprehended.

Miss Marion Reineke and her friend Miss Eleanor Engelking, students at Downer Institute at Milwaukee, Wis.,will arrive in New Ulm Saturday to enjoy a week’s Easter vacation at the home of the former’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. G. F. Reineke.
