High school students win top Polkatown hog honors

TIM WAIBEL’S York-Duroc cross top took grand championship honors at the Polkatown Hog Show Thursday.

The youngsters stole the spotlight Wednesday at the annual Polkatown Hog Show at the Brown County Fairgrounds Coliseum building.

The champion lightweight hog was owned by Dan Lendt, a Sleepy Eye High School sophomore, while the champion heavyweight hog belonged to Tim Waibel, New Ulm High School junior.

Waibel’s classmate, Tim Kohn of Courtland, had the runner-up pig in the light-weight class, while second place in the heavyweight class went to S. O. Gunderson of LeSueur.

The show is sponsored annually by the Brown and Nicollet County Pork Producer associations.

JUDGE ED HUBLEY, superintendent of the New Ulm Swine Testing Station, characterized this year’s entries as being of excellent quality.

Lightweight champion, weighing in at 203 pounds, was owned by Dan Lendt.

“The quality last year was good,” he said, “but it seemed even better this year. The producers are probably using better quality boars.”

Of the two champion pigs, Hubley said they “looked like they would excell in carcass cutability. They were extremely clean and yet looked like they’d done well in the feedlot.”

Lendt’s pig weighed 203 and Waibel’s 228. Lightweight hogs fall between 190 and 220pounds ,and heavyweights 221to 250.

The pigs were sold to Hormel on a grade-and-yield basis.
