During the past month the remark was often heard that January was one of the warmest Januarys on record. This is a mistake, as January was not unusually warm, when compared with other Januarys. The mean temperature was 15.90 degrees above zero. This is somewhat low, when other Januarys are considered, and is not so much higher than the ordinary January. The lowest mean temperature recorded in January during the last ten years was in 1918, when it was 8.06 degrees above zero. That was one of the coldest Januarys experienced in the Northwest for years. The thermometer for days did not rise above the zero point.
Warmest in Ten Years
The highest mean temperature in the preceding ten years was in 1923 when it was 23.77 degrees. The mean temperatures for the past ten years as recorded by Alex. L. Henle, local voluntary weather observer, follow: 1917, 10.53 degrees; 1918, 8.06; 1919, 23.20; 1920, 10.29; 1921,22.35; 1922, 14.14; 1923, 23.77; 1924,10.42; 1925, 13.48; 1926,15.90.
