The ninth annual show of the Brown County Poultry association, which was held at the New Ulm Armory, beginning last Thursday and closing Sunday, will go down in history as the biggest and best exhibition of its kind in the entire Northwest. This is true, not only in the number of entries, but also as to the attendance, liberal premiums and special prize awards, and the general arrangement and management of the gigantic undertaking. The two judges, as well as hundreds of visitors from a distance, were loud in their praise of the local show and its management.
Nearly 1,300 Birds
Superintendent Jacob Vetter, assisted by the officers, local association members and other helpers, started the herculean task of arranging the exhibits, last Thursday morning. It was a big job, but, thanks to the excellent cooperation of all interested, it was accomplish ed in record time. There were nearly 1,300 birds entered by a total of 115 exhibitors from 46 different communities. Heavy snowfalls in Iowa and other adjoining states, and rumors that the roads leading to New Ulm were blocked with snow, caused many fanciers residing outside of Minnesota, as well as in the northern section of the state, to withhold their exhibits. Had these conditions not existed, it is confidently believed that at least 1,500 birds would have been entered.
Large Crowds Attend
One of the outstanding features of the poultry shows held in New Ulm, is the fact that they are always well attended. Conservative estimates of the total attendance place it at several thousand people, including a large number from out-of-town. Many exhibitors came to New Ulm to give the show the “once over,” and expressed surprise and satisfaction at its great size and general success. They were well pleased with the manner in which the awards were made.
Good State Meet
The state meet of the National White Wyandotte club, which was held in connection with the local show, this year, proved a decided success in every way. It is probable that New Ulm will be honored with future state meets of this and one or more other national poultry clubs. Many of the other classes were well filled, also, and the exhibits generally were equal to those displayed at any show in the Northwest. Competition was unusually keen in a number of classifications, and the judges, Prof. A. C. Smith of University Farm, St. Paul, and Harry Atkins of Davenport, Iowa, found it no easy matter to award the prizes. Both gentlemen, and especially Mr. Atkins, who had never before been in New Ulm, were generous in their praise of the local show and the manner in which it was conducted.
Many Exhibitors
As previously stated, 115 breeders and fanciers exhibited their aristocratic fowls at the poultry show here, this year. They were from the following 46 communities: Prescott, Wis.; Albertville, Alden, Anoka, Arlington, Bingham Lake, Blooming Prairie, Blue Earth, Brownton, Can-by, Courtland, Echols, Emmons, Fairmont, Faribault, Farmington, Gibbon, Hanska, Kasota, Lafayette, Lamberton, LeRoy, Le Sueur, Le Sueur Center, Lewisville, Lynd, Madison, Mapleton, Minneapolis, Montevideo, Mora, Morgan, New Richland, New Ulm, Northfield, North St. Paul, Redwood Falls, St. James, St. Paul, Sleepy Eye,Truman, Tyler, Waconia, Watertown, Winona, and Winthrop.
