CITY POLICE HAVE UNEVENTFUL YEAR

Capture No Murderers

Nor Anarchists and Only

Two Dozen Drunks.

——–

From the report of Chief Harmening submitted to the city council at Tuesday night’s regular monthly meeting would appear that the city police have time to enjoy life in this burg without worrying much about desperate criminals for there were no arrests made for any of the major crimes of the calendar. True it is that a murderer committed his foul crime in New Ulm but he made so complete a getaway that the local police had no chance even to apply the third degree. No burglars were tenants of the city hoosegow, tho house prowlers did give more or less trouble at one time. No stickup artists plied their trade in this peaceful community with the exception of the one who also committed the murder above referred to. Auto thieves gave New Ulm a wide berth, even the joy riders being pretty good, all things considered. No pickpockets and only one Wild Woman disturbed the peaceful tenor of New Ulm life during 1925.

Make 52 Arrests In 1925

Quiet tho the days of the local police were, that does not mean that they were not busy, for in addition to keep-ing New Ulm people on the right side of the road and chasing them when they parked at hydrant corners, they made an average of one arrest every week the whole year thru and just half of those arrested went into duress vile because they insisted on taking the Volstead amendment as a joke.In other words, twenty-four persons were slapped on the wrist for naughty indulgence in white mule and two were so wicked as to carry it about on their persons with the evident intent of sharing their illicit pleasures with others. Auto speeder and auto law violators numbered four, and two bad boys rode their two wheeled steeds along the sidewalks.Five were charged with assault and one with disorderly conduct while eleven were picked up on general principles, no charges being lodged against them.

Of the 52 prisoners, 19 were residents of New Ulm. $809.76 was collected in fines.

Traffic Cop Work

Altho the Chief’s report says nothing about the department’s work in handling crowds on special occasions, it is right and proper that a year’s summary of the activities of the police should mention their very excellent service in this line. Not a single auto accident occurred at any time when there was congestion of traffic in the city and there were but few and only trifling accidents in the motor line on New Ulm streets during the entire year. The police are to be commended for their efficient handling of the immense crowds that flocked here at various times and left here again, whole in body and limb, and with undamaged means of transportation. Few cities have so clean a record in this line.
