ST. PETER — New Ulm High School won its fourth consecutive hockey game with a 15-2 rout of LeSueur Saturday at Gustavus rink. This was the first “home” game in NUHS hockey history.
The Eagles led 5-1 after one period, 11-1 after two and kept the LeSueur goalie busy down to the final buzzer.
Doug Gulden scored six goals and had five assists. Tim Steinbach had three goals and six assists; Tom Hengel, three goals and six assists; Mike Hitchcock, Pat David and Mike French one goal each; Tom Steinbach, Brian Meyer and Scott Fischer one assist each.
The Eagles demonstrated some excellent puck passing to set up goals.
Coach Tom Macho admitted it was a fairly impressive performance, but thought the team let up at times with the big lead.
“I think our team is looking ahead more to the next game with St. Peter,” Macho said.
The Eagles face St. Peter High School 5 p.m. today at Gustavus.
After LeSueur fell far behind, the Giants resorted to a rough style of play. The Eagles responded with some hard checking also and it became a physical contest in the last period. LeSueur was called on 10 penalties and New Ulm on seven.
Late in the game, several LeSueur players tried to throw hard body checks on New Ulm defenseman Dohn Pagel (a football fullback). Pagel threw a hard shoulder block, knocking the LeSueur player to the ice. Both went to the penalty box for charging, but New Ulm fans gave Pagel much applause for taking on the LeSueur challengers.
Bryon Dahl was on goal two periods and Bob Ring tended goal the last period. One of the two LeSueur goals was kicked in by a New Ulm player accidentally.
New Ulm had 64 shots on goal to only 16 for LeSueur.
About 300 fans — mostly from New Ulm — witnessed the contest.
