The assessments against property on Minnesota street for sprinkling during the past season, levied by the Board of Public Works, came up for confirmation by the city council at a special meeting Tuesday evening. A protest signed by J. P. Graff, Bernard Esser, Geo. O. Gastler, Aug. Puhlmann, Mrs. Mabel Frenzel, John C. Siebenbrunner and Otto F. Oswald, was read by City Clerk W. P. Backer. The council deferred action on the confirmation of the assessments until next Tuesday evening, to give them an opportunity to make an investigation as to the manner in which the assessments were levied. The property owners, who were present were informed that they would have an opportunity to be heard next Tuesday evening. The protest stat d “The board did not take into consideration the benefits derived from said sprinkling; they only assessed according to frontage.”
A petition signed by a large number of property owners near the new dumping grounds on South Valley street requested that refuse be properly buried and covered. The matter was referred to the Building and Grounds committee and the Board of Health.
Hurrying to Fires
Councilor John G. Gronau referred to the public hurrying to fires and interfering with the activities of the department. The parking of cars near street intersections and fire hydrants on Minnesota street was also discussed.
Applications for soft drink licenses were deferred until the special meeting next Tuesday evening. A resolution abating the assessment for laying water mains and for grading on North Jefferson street levied against the Mueller property was adopted.
The resignation of Superintendent H. H. Huevelman effective Jan. 15, was accepted.
