SLEEPY EYE PAVING JOB IS COMPLETED
Eleven Blocks Have Been Improved in Nearby City, Much to the Added Attractiveness and Convenience of the Main Street.Unfavorable Weather Conditions Hampered the Work.– Paving Has Taken Hold, and More Will Be Done Next Year.
——–
The eleven blocks of paving, the contract for which was let during the summer months by the city of Sleepy Eye, has been completed. Unfavorable weather conditions retarded operations and caused the work to lag. However, the Sleepy Eye officials are greatly elated that the contract was completed prior to the coming of winter. The work was started the forepart of October and it was anticipated to have the contract completed by the end of that month, but unfavorable weather conditions caused a cessation of work.
Eight blocks were paved first, the pavement extending from curb to curb. The pavement on the other three blocks, in the west part of the city, is not as wide. At first six inches of concrete base was poured, and after this set and dried two and one half inches of asphalt was laid. The first inch and a half of the top coating is a mixture of asphalt and crushed rock, while the top inch is largely of asphalt.
It is said that property owners along the street are pleased that the street is paved and the work is completed. Most of those, who voiced opposition to the improvement are now satisfied. It is also stated that some of those residing at either end of the paving now wish it had been extended farther.
Although nothing definite has been done, it is said that property owners along certain streets of the neighboring city will petition for paving next spring. Sleepy Eye has taken a decided step forward and is to be congratulated.
