Several auto accidents in New Ulm during the past week have been serious and in two instances people were injured and received medical attention at local hospitals.
Truck Strikes Man
Perhaps the most serious accident happened Tuesday evening about eight o’clock when Emil Vetter was struck by an oil truck driven by Roy Strate and belonging to the Robert Radtke Independent Oil Company. Reports have it that Strate was driving on the wrong side of the road on the so-called Strate Hill on Summit Avenue. Vetter resides on Summit Avenue with his mother. How the accident occurred is not definitely known at this time as Mr. Strate was out of the city and we were unable to learn details. Mr. Vetter was taken to the Loretto Hospital where an examination showed that his left leg had been injured below the knee.
Broken Wheel Causes Tip
Friday evening a Mr. Gibson of Marshall was driving towards New Ulm on the Courtland road and nearing the old Stolz farm the right wheel on his new Dodge Coupe broke, throwing the car over into a ditch. Mr. Gibson was injured about the head and was hurried to the Loretto Hospital and given medical attention. His injuries proved to be less serious than at first anticipated and he was able to leave the institution the following day.
Woman Driver Flees
Mrs. G. A. Strouch had a narrow escape from serious injury Sunday evening about five o’clock when a woman driver struck the rear of the Pullman touring car which Mrs. Strouch was driving and tore off the tire and rim on the right side of the automobile. Mrs. Strouch had taken a party of sisters from the Loretto Hospital out to St. George and had just returned from the trip after leaving them again at the Hospital. She was driving down the hill from the hospital when two cars came from the north. Mrs. Strouch slowed down to allow the cars to pass and the driver of the first car did like wise in order that she might pass. The woman driving the second car from the north swung in ahead of the first automobile and the result was a collision with the Pullman car.The driver did not stop to ascertain whether or not anyone had been injured as a result of the impact but hurried on her way. The car Mrs. Strouch was driving was forced out of its direct path and ran up onto the sidewalk near the John Manderfeld residence before the driver could stop the engine. Fortunately no one was injured.
