Auto Crash Saturday Night on North Jefferson Street Leads to Search

of Premises.

——–

Henry and Thomas Walters, farmers of the Cambria neighborhood, were in New Ulm Saturday. That evening Policeman Ed. Wagner was called to North Jefferson street by a report of an auto smashup. When he arrived on the scene he discovered two bottles one a quart and another a pint of the kicky stuff in the Ford touring car, which the Walters brothers were driving. He said, “That’s enough, come with me.” They went along to the police station. They were placed in the city jail, where they remained until Monday morning.

Claim Collision

The visitors claim that a car, bearing a South Dakota license had collided with their car. The Ford was somewhat the worse for wear. The front wheels were smashed and the front axle bent. The officers were not successful in locating a car with a South Dakota license which had been in a collision.

Search Loesch Place

The Walters brothers are said to have given the information that they had secured the “moon” from Peter Loesch, who resides on North Broadway. Tuesday morning about 11 o’clock, Sheriff W. J. Julius, Deputy Sheriff Wm. H. Gieseke, Chief of Police Alwin Harmening and Policeman John Herzog, composed a flying squadron, and armed with a search warrant, went to the Loesch place and instituted a search. Their efforts were rewarded, for they found a three-gallon jug in the basement, which was nearly full of “moon.” This was confiscated and now reposes in the police station.

It is said a large number of jugs and bottles were on the premises, indicating Loesch was in the business of dispensing “moon.” However, no evidence of manufacture was noted.

Loesch was taken before Justice N. Henningsen, where a preliminary hearing was called. He was bound over to the grand jury, and his bail fixed at $500.
