THOSE SILENT gray box-like structures below German Street at First S. are pilings for the new post office. Ground at the site is very soft and workmen ad to go quite a ways to get on solid footing. Now the Postal Service is ready for the next step, letting the bid for construction of the building, expected to be let about Nov. 1. The contractor will have about 10 months to complete the job. The pilings work was done as part of a single contract which included demolishing existing structures and clearing the site in preparation for construction. (Photo by Sally Du Four).
