Contract awards have been made for the first paving to he done in Sleepy Eye. The main street which has been very unsatisfactory for such a long time will be paved first. Approximately eight blocks of paving or 17,480 square yds have been contracted for. Work will start at once and before cold weather sets in the residents of Sleepy Eye and that community will be enjoying the new improvement.
Gumbo Soil Bad.
Unfortunately Sleepy Eye has never had the advantages in surface soil that New Ulm enjoys. In this city good drainage and natural gravel has gone away with a good deal of the difficult experience with the gumbo soil with which our neighboring city has had to contend. Undoubtedly at one time the street was a part of a lake bed and for this reason has caused all the trouble in the years that the city has been using the street extensively.
In former years in Sleepy Eye it was not an uncommon thing for teams and wagons or buggies to become almost mired in the mud on the main street after a heavy rain.
The City tried to remedy this situation thru the use of crushed rock. This alleviated the condition for a short time but in the past year, especially, the main street has been in a deplorable condition. Ruts and bumps have made it almost impassable.
Let Contracts.
It is with great pride that the City of Sleepy Eye announces the projected improvement. At a recent meeting of the City Council and City officials when bids were let for the paving project, the Larson Construction Company of Albert Lea were low bidders on the vibrolithic concrete pavement, their offer being $2.53 per square yard. Fielding & Shepple of St. Paul were given the award for concrete pavement at $2.19 per square yard. The contract for sheet asphalt was given to the Western Asphalt Company of Minneapolis. There were ten bids received and the three lowest were accepted.
Work Starts Soon.
The work of paving will start within a week or two and the street which is now the main thoroughfare of the little city will be greatly improved.
