MARSHALL BUSINESS
MEN TO BUILD A POOL

Reports Of Two Cities Are Strongly In Favor Of Projects.

New Ulm was going to have a swimming pool but when the actual cost of the project was realized it was deemed best to wait until another year and in the meantime committees were instructed to learn what other communities are doing to take care of the expense of their swimming pools and then New Ulm would go ahead and complete its plans. For the benefit of those who are interested in the swimming pool project the following reports are submitted:
Marshall Building A Pool
The Marshall News-Messenger published the accompanying article last week as Marshall business men are making plans for a swimming pool for that city. “Local men are making good progress in securing pledges for money to build a swimming pool in Marshall. Plans are now under way for a joint meeting in the neat future of committees from the School Board the City Council, and the Marshall Business Men’s Association.
“More than 4,800 persons swam in the Sheldon, Iowa, swimming pool in one month, according to a letter received by the News-Messenger from J. A. DeWitt of Sheldon. The net profit for the month was $476.79. Mr. DeWitt’s letter reads, in part as follows:–
“The Sanitary Swimming Pool Co., Sioux City, Iowa, built our pool, and workmanship is first class in every manner. The only feature that we can complain of is the filtering tanks. These are not large enough by half to change the water in from 24 to 36 hours. They had promised to correct this, and we expect their workmen here the first of the week to do so.
“The following is the first month’s operation: adult users 1577, child users 1581. These were admissions sold at the pool. We have out some 300 season tickets besides this, which were paid for before the pool was constructed, and in addition to the above, there were some 1200 swims used by the season ticket holders.
“The cost of operation for the month was $391.27, which consists of laundry $120, labor $200, miscellaneous $71.17. The last figure includes $12 light and power. Our net profit was figured on tickets sold at the pool only.
“Our pool is controlled by a committee of six, two from the council, two from the School Board, and two from the Commercial Club. The School Board furnished $4,000, the town the site, and the Commercial club raised the balance by borrowing $2,000 and the sale of season tickets. When the $2,000 has been paid back we shall turn the pool over to the school Board for operation…”
Pipestone Pool Successful
“It is evident that the Kiwanians and other business men of Pipestone whose support made possible the swimming pool, have in this enterprise provided a means of pleasure and benefit that will be greatly appreciated by the people, especially the children of this community”, says the Pipestone County Star, and adds that it also promises to bring a large number of visitors to that city.
The Star goes on to say, in part, of the opening:
“The magnitude of the crowd that attended the opening of the Pipestone sanitary swimming pool on Sunday, gave striking evidence of the widespread popular interest in this new center of recreation and amusement. A throng numbering not less than 3,000 people witnessed the afternoon exhibition, and during the day 850 swimmers and bathers enjoyed themselves in the water. Of those who went into the pool, about 300 were adults.
“Besides the large number of Pipestone people and those from other parts of the county who were present there were visiting parties from Tracy, Worthington, Luverne, Slayton, Marshall, Rock Rapids, Madison Lake, Wilson, Flandreau and other points. Several groups of tourists, who reached this city late last week remained here over Sunday for the special purpose of taking a plunge in the swimming pool. The large crowd was taken care of in a satisfactory manner, and all expressed delight with the facilities afforded by the new pool.
The regular hours announced for the swimming pool to be open each day are as follows: 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.; 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. An attendant will always be in charge during these hours, with extra help during especially busy periods.
With hundreds of people getting ready for the opening of the new swimming pool, local stores handling bathing suits and caps experienced an unprecedented demand for these articles the latter part of the week.
