County board urged to aid in post office acquisition

New Ulm Post Office Building
Brown County was asked Monday to help acquire the New Ulm Post Office Building for use as a museum.
The Brown County Historical Society had earlier shown interest in acquiring the building after the new post office building is completed some time next year.
A group headed by curator Paul Klammer Monday urged the county board to consider trying to acquire the building, and New Ulm City Manager Richard Salvati told the board that the city and county should spend some time trying to implement a plan for acquisition. Salvati said that there is nothing comparable in southern Minnesota to the present post office building, which is listed in the Historic Register.
ACCORDING TO KLAMMER,when the building is vacated, the state would have the first chance to acquire it, then the county and then the city.
Klammer said that the building would require some interior remodeling. The exterior, he pointed out, cannot be altered because of its listing in the Historic Register.
The state historical society would provide all the technical assistance required, according to Klammer. He added that the post office building offers twice as much display space as the current historical society building.
The county board took no action at this time on the proposal.
At Monday’s meeting, the board did approve a $20,705 proposed budget for operational expenses of the historical society in 1976.
