FIVE NEW ULM MEN DRAW JAIL TERMS
WENZEL SCHLOEGEL TO STAND TRIAL MONDAY.
——–
Judge Jos. W. Molyncaux
on Bench at Federal Term
of Court.-Nicollet Man
Also Sentenced.
——–
Judge Jos. W. Molynecux at Mankato Tuesday, in federal court, sentenced five New Ulm men to stiff sentences, for violations of the Volstead act. The five are Chas. Lindmeyer, Ed. Tauer, Chas. Manderfeld, Alex. J. Vogel and A. S. Dorn. The sentences range from eight to three months.
Result of Raids.
All but the case of A. S. Dorn are the result of recent raids by federal prohibition officers in New Ulm. It is said that Lindmeyer, who resides on North Front street, and Tauer and Manderfeld, who conduct the National cafe, just escaped having their cases turned over to a federal grand jury in St. Paul, where they would, no doubt, have been indicted upon several counts. They each plead guilty to conducting a nuisance and were sentenced to serve eight months in the Blue Earth county jail at Mankato. Had they been indicted by a grand jury it is likely, upon conviction, the sentence would have been stiffer, possibly the walls of the federal prison at Ft. Leavenworth, Kans.,would have cast its shadow upon them. Besides conducting a nuisance they were charged with possession and sale. These latter charges were dismissed. Lindmeyer was granted a stay of one week to get his affairs in shape, while Tauer commenced his term in the Blue Earth county jail yesterday. Manderfeld was granted a stay of sentence until Nov. 20. The eight months’ sentence of the three men will be cut 40 days, as is customary.
Vogel was sentenced to serve three months in the Sibley county jail at Gaylord. He was granted a stay until May 16. Evidence was secured during a recent raid at the Grand Hotel.
Wednesday morning the stay of execution of the sentence of Vogel was revoked upon application of sure-ties of his bond. A federal officer came to New Ulm the same afternoon and accompanied Vogel to Gaylord, where he commenced his sentence.
The A. J. Esser case was
continued until the October term.
W. Wilkin, former lessee of the Grand, against whom the federal officers secured evidence of infractions of the Volstead act is still at large, but it is presumed he will be picked up and will face charges, either at this term or the October term of federal court.
A.S. Dorn Sentenced.
A. S. Dorn, who conducted a soft drink parlor in the Wenzel Schloegel building at the intersection of Broadway and Third North streets, some time ago, but who now resides at Mankato, was sentenced upon a charge of possession and sale and was given a five months’ term in the Blue Earth county jail. This will be commenced Monday morning. Schloegel, who is charged with possession, will stand trial, which will be called Monday morning. Christ. R. Dickhudt, who entered a plea of guilty to the charge of possessing intoxicating liquor in a soft drink parlor at Nicollet and also to a charge of sale, was sentenced to pay a fine of $400 on the possession charge and to a three months’ term in the Ramsey county jail for the sale. A stay in execution until May 17 was granted.
