When Charles Murphy, fugitive pickpocket suspect, failed to appear in court before Justice of the Peace A. D. Saper at Kansas City, Co., Friday, after his hearinig had been post-poned for the second time, he left a chief mourner behind in the person of a Kansas City resident, who had staked the munificent sum of $3,000 on a gamble that Murphy would show up in due time to save the bail bond in this amount from being declared forfeited by the justice.
Offers $25 Reward.
Murphy’s “physog” will soon be plastered plumb full of reward stickers, unless he experiences a change of heart soon and decides to “take his medicine.” For, in addition to the $100 offéred by the Brown county authorities for his apprehension, his Kansas City bondsman has posted the sum of $25 for the same purpose. At the adjourned hearing, held Friday, and which was attended by Sheriff W.J. Julius of this city, the bondsman’s attorney appeared, sans Murphy, and filed a motion for abatement of the $3,000 bail bond, because of certain alleged defects in the wording of the bond. After listening to the arguments pro and con, Justice Saper took the matter under advisement and stated that he would announce his decision on the abatement motion today.
Stalling for Time.
The date of the hearing in justice court at Kansas City was originally set at February 17, but was subsequently postponed until February 20 and 27, after Murphy’s attorneys had made various excuses for his client’s inability to be present. In reality, it now appears that the entire affair was a clever stalling for time, for the purpose of enabling the defense counsel to produce Murphy. Being unable to do so, an attempt has now been launched to avoid liability of the fugitive’s bondsman for alleged technical defects in the bail bond.
The county prosecutor at Kansas City, who is looking after the interests of Jackson county in the matter of Murphy’s forfeited bond, has written a lengthy letter to County Attorney T. O. Streissguth of this city, stating that the former will do all in his power to force payment of the bail money, as well as to apprehend the fugitive. However, both Mr. Streissguth and Sheriff Jullus are of the opinion that Murphy has “flown the coop” and is not in Kansas City. Consequently, they believe, the man will not show up at the hearing today. Governing their actions accordingly, they will renew their efforts to locate the pickpocket suspect, and plans for such action are already ma-terializing.
“Show Me” Is Right.
Sheriff Julius returned home, Saturday night, from his second trip to Kansas City to bring Murphy back to New Ulm. He says that any doubts that may have previously existed in his mind as to the authenticity and applicability of the slogan: “Show me, I’m from Missourí!” have been thoroughly dispersed and put to rout. He no longer questions the right of a Missourian to the use of this slogan.
