Rhodes wins holiday bowling tournament

Robert (Country Bob) Rhodes, the KNUJ disc jockey, who has developed into a better bowler than a softball or basketball player, won the $40 first prize Saturday in the annual Concordia Lanes holiday match bowling tournament. This tourney has been going on for several decades, dating back to the original Concordia Club on North State.
Rhodes defeated Gardell Kuelbs, 2 frequent finalist, in the championship match by 575 to 505. Kuelbs was averaging over 195 through four series before slipping.His last game dropped to 148. Kuelbs last won this tourney four years ago.
“I’ve been in this tourney five years and this is the first time I ever did anything,” confessed Rhodes.
In the semifinal round Saturday, Rhodes topped Jim Bastian 569 to 520 while Kuelbs eliminated Doug Miklas 590 to 489.
In the third place match, Miklas beat Bastian 574 to 488.
Top four places paid off $40, $30, $20 and $12.
Rhodes averaged 192 for 15 games. He beat Bob Weber 584-558, Jack Kneip 608-530, Jim Hogen 547-535 in the first three rounds.
Bastian had opening series of 635 and 670 but dropped to 523, 520 and 488 thereafter. Kuelbs’ scores were 563, 595, 612, 590 and 505. Miklas rolled 498, 591, 618, 489 and 574
