“HAVE A HEART.” This is the slogan of Saturday, September 18, when the children of New Ulm will sell little heart shaped tags throughout our city and community for the benefit work of the Volunteers of America. This is a National Organization with head-quarters in every state of the Union and their work is that of reform in the prisons.

Volunteers in America.

The Volunteers of America was organized in 1896 by General and Maud Ballington Booth for Prison Reform Work. This is Citizenship work — making citizens of the men as they are discharged from the prisons where they have served their sentences, by means of Hope Halls and a Parole Farm in every State. The children of the destitute families of prisoners are made future good American citizens by means of education and environment through the 70 homes for children.

Work of Organization.

During the past three years, over 100,000 men have been arrested; over 15,000 men have secured jobs and over 170,000 children have been trained in the way of citizenship through the efforts of this organization. The only means of carrying on this great work is by the tag days and voluntary subscriptions from residents in the various states. Each state has a headquarters city, and there are national head-quarters, but local headquarters have not been provided. Children between the ages of 10 and 15 years are invited to sell the tags in the community for whatever the people will give for them. The funds are deposited here and checked to the Volunteers of America To be used for their work in this state.

Repay Effort

As an incentive and a reward for their efforts, prizes will be offered by the merchants of this city. The six children bringing in the largest amounts for their tags, will receive special prizes. To those, who sell as much as $3.00 worth, and not getting one of the prizes will be given a pass to the movies at the Lyric Theatre. This is donated by the management of the theatre. The sponsors for the day are: Rev. Carl H. Yettru, Rev. C. H. Hohn; Rev. Father Schlinkert, Mrs. Geo. Reineke, Mrs. Geo. Weiser, Mrs. C.G. Reim and Mrs. Albert Pfaender. Headquarters will be located in the restroom of the Dakota House under the leadership of Mrs. Rollin Church. The children will call there for the tags and their instructions. After their return they will be awarded the prizes from this place. Mrs. Rollin Church will be in charge of the headquarters which will be open at nine o’clock Saturday morning.

List of Prizes.

First Prize-A beaded bag, given by Bee Hive.

Second Prize-A silver Eversharp pencil given by the Backer Pharmacy.

May every citizen of New Ulm and the surrounding community Have a Heart” Saturday, thus helping this great citizenship work of our country, helping either our own community or our neighbor’s community. The child of today is the citizen of the future and good or bad, the two great factors in the making of that citizenship are education and environment. Help to take children out of their vicious surroundings and place them in these homes where they are trained to be good, useful citizens for the work of tomorrow.
