If Don Cordes (No. 18) isn’t a marked man at the Brown County Fair demolition derby, mayhem isn’t practiced at one of the fair’s most popular events.

Cordes, a former winner of the Brown County event and consistent challenger for the title won the Nicollet County championship Saturday night. A week before he came out as the winner for the Watonwan County destruction derby.

Forty-two cars have been entered in the event which last year drew a capacity crowd. In fact, late arrivals were turned away to prompt the fair board to increase seating capacity this year.

Seventeen of last year’s participants are back again this season including Linus (Butch) Tauer who beat Cordes for the championship. Consolation champion Norm Wieland is back as is first heat runnerup Paul Schanus.

Final four survivors of each of three heats enter the championship smash-up and all other cars still running head into the mass consolation free-for-all.

If time permits, a Powder Puff event is a possibility.
