Into Aldermanic Fight.

No Real Issues.

——–

In a neck to neck race Dr. Emil Mueller nosed out in the mayoralty contest with 38 votes to the good in yesterday’s city election. It was generally predicted by the friends of both candidates that the vote would be close and the result verified their predictions. Anxious voters besieged the polling places while the votes were being counted for the office of mayor, and intense interest manifested itself in the outcome of the mayoralty contest. As has happened on so many previous occasions, both candidates failed to carry their own ward.

Three New Councilors.

As a further result of the election New Ulm will have three new councilors, John F. Gollnast winning out as alderman in the first ward, Dr. Jos. H.Vogel in the second and John G. Gronau in the fourth. William Lieb won out for re-election in a four-cornered race in the third.

Other City Officials

Re-elected.

Gottlieb Oswald was re-elected to the office of city treasurer, William P. Backer to the office of city clerk, N. Henningsen for city justice and Jos. A. Tauer for constable. Some parties, no friends of Ed. J. Berg, deputy county treasurer, started a sticker campaign for him in the eleventh hour without his knowledge and consent for the office of city clerk. As soon as he learned that such a move was on foot, he immediately issued a statement that he was not a candidate, that his name for the office was being used without his consent and that he would not qualify even, if elected. By means of writing in names, Fred Pfaender was elected city justice and Ed. Tauer constable.

Candidates Majorities.

From the tabulated returns it appears that Dr. Emil Mueller won out with a majority of 38 votes, Wm. P. Backer with 1479 votes; Gottlieb Oswald with 376 votes. John Gollnast in the first ward had a majority of 118 votes; in the second ward, Dr. J. H. Vogel had a majority of 51 votes; in the third ward, William Lieb was re-elected with a plurality of 121 votes and in the fourth ward John G. Gronau won out with a majority of 124 votes.

Very Much Apathy.

There was considerable apathy on the part of the voters in the election and at least 1500 failed to go to the polls to register their choice. There werereally no issues in the campaign and the question of the popularity of the candidates entered largely into the campaign. In some of the wards the heating question played a part and had a decided influence on the votes.

Appointive Officers Next.

Now that the election is over, interest centers on the appointive officers. The newly elected mayor will have to make recommendations to the council for appointive officers, notably city attorney, police force and street commissioner. Mayor Mueller has not intimated to any one whether any changes in the official family will be made.

Complete returns of the election ap-pear elsewhere.
