Shedding light on cruelty toward our neighbors

To the editor: I grew up in New Ulm a long time ago. I graduated from Cathedral High School in 1960. I have lived most of my life in San Antonio, Texas but I carry in my soul my home town, New Ulm. The Journal has kept me in touch. May I thank you, the editorial staff, for covering bravely the important issues of peace and justice, and printing many different viewpoints. I read with particular interest the last column by Randy Krzmarzick: “Minnesota in the center of the news universe”.  He focuses on what is unfortunately happening in communities all over the United States ...

‘It’s Miller time’

To the editor: I’m not a beer drinker. I’m sure I’ve never uttered this proclamation before. But now that I’ve done so in print, I must explain that the “Miller time” to which I’m referring is that it’s time for Stephen Miller to go. Miller is the puppeteer behind the scenes pulling the 2025 strings. He’s sending the president out to do his real estate deals, which the President believes is his particular bailiwick. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the unelected, never-legislatively-approved Miller has dealt himself into an all-too-powerful position to wreak his own ...

Trump’s behavior is depressing

To the editor: Is this who we want as the leader of our country? Based on newspaper reports and national television news reports: • Instigates an insurrection of the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, because he didn’t like the election results. • Without evidence or facts, gutted numerous federal programs affecting critical health, science, and education endeavors, costing tens of thousands of jobs. • Pals with a convicted child molester (EPSTEIN), as he (TRUMP) is a multi convicted felon himself. Morally bankrupt. • For no reason other than being a vindictive bully, ...

Keep our neighborhoods safe

To the editor:  “Who is my neighbor?” This is a poignant question of faith. Jesus beckons us with his answer. A very dear Hispanic woman is suffering the following trauma. Please hear her within your heart through Jesus’ eyes of compassion: “Although I am a citizen (for decades), my husband is not (they met in MN as teenagers). He has been in the naturalization process for over 6 years, but it is too slow… Although we couldn’t afford it, we took a big gamble and spent $2,500 applying for his work permit. The permit was denied…and we didn’t get the money back.  I ...

Trump’s paramilitary force imposing state terror

To the editor: M. Gessen had an interesting article on the New York Times web page on Sunday, 1/25/26 in which the argument was presented that the Trump Administration has now arrived at state terror. The use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Control agents as a paramilitary force bypasses the use of National Guard, especially since increased recruitment has expanded their numbers. President Trump, Vice President Vance and advisor Steven Miller have all stated publicly that Federal agents will have absolute immunity in carrying out their official duties State ...

‘We has met the enemy, And he is us’-Pogo

To the editor: One would think that since the era of ancient Greece, humans would finally understand reality. Unfortunately, absolutely nothing has changed. The ancient writer Homer describes the journey home of Odysseus at the end of the Trojan war. Odysseus must sail between the Straits of Messina that hold two sea monsters. On the left is the six headed monster Scylla represented by jagged rocks. On the right is the monster Charybdis that is represented by a whirlpool. This story is the origin of the saying of being between a rock and a hard place. My point and re-telling the ...
