St Mary’s races to subsection finals

ST. PETER -- Sleepy Eye St. Mary's used an early 21-0 run to advance in the Section 2A girls' basketball playoffs on Friday at St. Peter High School.

The Knights used that early run and defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 70-52 in Section 2A girls' basketball playoff action.

The Chargers led 3-0 right away, but the Knights scored 21 straight before Emma Nelson ended the run with an inside basket.

St.  Mary's (21-7) will play in the Section 2A, North Subsection championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Knights will play BOLD, the No. 1 seed in the North Subsection.

Madison Mathiowetz led the Knights with 25 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Sydney Windschitl scored 18 points for the Knights, 16 of those in the first half. Windschitl aslo had six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Reagan Severson scored 16 points for the Knights.

Abby Riederer scored 14 points for the Chargers and Emma Nelson scored 13. Lauren Paulsen finished with 10 points.

Up big in the first half, Windschitl kept the advantage in favor of the Knights with a traditional three-point play to make it 34-11 with 5:39 left. They led 49-18 at halftime.
