NEW ULM -- Martin Luther College men’s basketball player Ian Paulsen was named Honorable Mention All-UMAC by the conference on Tuesday.
Paulsen battled through a tough season to earn all-conference honors. The junior forward also started as a defensive back on the football team, causing him to miss the start of the basketball season, and finished the season with eight total missed games (out of 25) due to an illness late in the year.
Paulsen made the most of his time on the court, however, and finished as the Knight’s leader in points (11.2), rebounds (6.4), assists (3.2), blocks (2.3) and steals (1.5) per game. This is the second consecutive season in which Paulsen led the team in all five categories, and the third straight season he led the team in points, rebounds, blocks and steals per game.
Paulsen also made a jump in the MLC record books this season. After blocking 39 shots this season, Paulsen moved into second place in program history with 117 career blocks and became the first player in program history ro record at least 100 career blocks and steals. Paulsen also moved into sixth place in program history with 459 career rebounds.
Junior forward Richard Eckmann was named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season.
