MLC women pick up win over Crown

Women's basketball

MLC 69, Crown 58

ST. BONIFACIUS -- The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team tied its season-high for points scored while setting a new season-best for points allowed in a 69-58 win at Crown College on Wednesday.

The Knights fell behind 15-6 after the first quarter, but took control of the game with a big second quarter, outscoring the Storm 21-8 in the period on the way to a 27-23 lead at the half.

MLC continued to build on its lead out of the locker room thanks to a 26-point third quarter to build a 53-40 lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth, the Knights held off the Storm and built the lead as high as 18 points on the way to the 11-point win.

Emily Witkowski had a career night for MLC, scoring 27 points to go with 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Faith Otte added 17 points and made six of her nine field goal attempts, while Cassandra Rose dished out a team-best five assists.

The Knights improved to 2-22 on the season and 2-13 in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 4-20 overall and 2-13 in league play in defeat.

Men's basketball

Crown 72, Crown 56

ST. BONIFACIUS -- The MLC men’s basketball team was unable to overcome slow starts in both halves in a 72-56 loss at Crown on Wednesday.

Crown raced out to a huge start to open the game, outscoring the Knights 25-5 in the first eight minutes before the Knights could get their feet underneath them. MLC was able to make a run in the final 12 minutes of the opening half, however, and cut the deficit to 39-33 at the break.

Jack Heichelbech led MLC with 11 points, while Ethan Eisenmann added 10 points. Jonathan Riebe led the Knights with six rebounds.

MLC fell to 7-17 on the season and 4-11 in UMAC play in defeat. The Knights will return home for the second finale on Saturday, February 16, when they host Northwestern-St. Paul in a game scheduled to tip off at 4:45 p.m.
