NEW ULM -- The Martin Luther College men’s basketball team saw the St. Scholastica Saints pull away in the second half of a 74-56 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference defeat on Saturday.
The Knights started slowly and trailed 11-2 in the opening minutes, but battled back to cut the CSS lead to four points at 34-30 at the half. Senior forward Richard Eckmann kept the Knights within striking distance with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.
The Saints pushed the lead into double figures early in the second half, but then threw the knockout punch in the final five minutes, pushing a 12-point lead into the final 18-point margin as the Knights made just two field goals during that stretch.
CSS finished the game shooting 52.8 percent from the field and shot 7-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc in the second half (10-of-27 for the game).
The Knights struggled on the offensive end, shooting 35.6 percent overall and 4-of-13 from downtown.
Eckmann led the Knights with 12 points. Ethan Eisenmann added nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds, while Austin DeNoyer scored eight points off the bench.
MLC fell to 6-15 on the season and 3-10 in UMAC play in defeat. CSS improved to 12-9 overall and 8-4 in league play with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they host Minnesota Morris in a game scheduled to tip off at 7:15 p.m.
Women's basketball
St. Scholastica 69,

NEW ULM -- The MLC women’s basketball team made a late comeback attempt but fell short in a 69-55 UMAC loss to St. Scholastica on Saturday.
The two defenses slugged it out in the first half. CSS led 17-8 after the first quarter, but MLC cut into the deficit and trailed only 31-26 at the half after holding the Saints to 34.2 percent shooting from the field.
CSS pushed its lead into double figures in the third quarter, but MLC used a 13-3 run over a five-minute stretch in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to seven (62-55) with two minutes to play. The Saints would respond, however, with a 7-0 run to close the game to secure the win.
The MLC defense kept the game time as it held CSS to 38.2 percent from the field, but the Saints were tough to stop from beyond the arc as they made 11-24 from downtown for the game.
Emily Witkowski was the Knights’ leading scorer with 19 points, and also tied Cassandra Rose for the team lead with nine rebounds. Faith Otte added 15 points, while Sarah Dewey finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
MLC fell to 1-20 on the season and 1-12 in UMAC play in defeat. CSS improved to 5-15 overall and 5-8 in league play with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they host Minnesota Morris in a game scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
