UW-Superior 74, MLC 69, 2 OT
SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Martin Luther College men’s basketball team lost in double overtime at UW-Superior by the score of 74-69 on Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference men's basketball action.
The Yellowjackets jumped to an early 14-point lead, but a pair of three-pointers by Nate Lindloff late in the first half sent the two teams into the break with UWS leading by only 8 points at 36-28.
MLC turned up the defensive pressure in the second half as it came all the way back to take the lead with 11:30 to play in regulation. Ian Paulsen put the Knights on top once again at 48-47 with 5:58 to play in the game, but MLC suffered through a scoring drought of more than 5 minutes to allow UWS a 4-point advantage heading into the final minute.
With the Knights trailing by 4, Paulsen scored a pair of baskets in the final 40 seconds to tie the score at 52-52. The Yellowjackets had two shots to win the game in the final seconds of regulation, but the MLC defense held firm to push the game into overtime.
The Knights took an early advantage in the first extra period and held a 61-58 lead with under 20 seconds to play, but the Yellowjackets’ Carter Brown hit a big 3-pointer from the wing to tie the score at 61-61 and send the two teams into a second overtime.
UWS controlled the second overtime from the start and built a 69-63 lead heading into the final minute. Joey Behm hit a pair of 3-pointers to cut the deficit to three in the final seconds, but UWS put the game away for good at the free throw line to secure the win.
Lindloff and Behm each scored 17 points to lead the Knights and combined to shot 10-18 from beyond the 3-point arc for the game. Paulsen added 14 points to go with 13 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
The Knights made UWS’ leading scorer Montroy Scott work throughout the night, but he was able to get to the charity stripe 15 times on his way to a game-high 28 points.
MLC fell to 5-14 on the season and 2-9 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 6-14 overall and 4-7 in league action with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, January 30, when they travel to North Central for a game scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
Women's basketball
UW-Superior 89, MLC 30
SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team was unable to slow down first-place UW-Superior in an 89-30 UMAC loss on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets’ defense was too much for the Knights to handle throughout the day, holding MLC to 21.6 percent shooting from the field and forcing 31 MLC turnovers.
UWS took advantage of those MLC miscues, turning those turnovers into 44 points on the other end. The Yellowjackets also lived in the paint offensively, outscoring the Knights 49-12 inside for the game.
Hannah Norlin led five UWS players in double figures with 19 points and added a game-high nine rebounds (five on the offensive end).
Emily Witkowski led MLC with 11 points, while Samantha Paul finisehd with a team-best five rebounds.
MLC fell to 1-18 on the season and 1-10 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 18-2 overall and 10-1 in conference with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to North Central for a game scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
