Crown knocks off Martin Luther

NEW ULM -- Crown College defeated Martin Luther College 88-79 on Wednesday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference mens' basketball game.

The contest featured three ties in the second half with the final one being 56-56 on MLC's Nate Lindloff 3-point shot. Austin DeNoyerХs basket gave back MLC the lead at 58-56.

Gunnar Ledin canned a 3-pointer with 9:42 left in the game to regain the lead for Crown of 59-58.

Crown started to take control and slowly pull away from MLC. Kole Jusczak's free throw gave the Storm an 81-71 advantage. Crown put together a 7-4 run over the last minute of the game. Timothy Wendel made a 3-point play to ensure the win for the Storm. MLC's Jonathan Riebe made a basket for the 88-79 final.

"We had a renewed passion and effort tonight. We broke out of our funk and this is the best we've shot this year," MLC head coach Greg Holzhueter said.

The Knights finished the game shooting 32 of 62 for 51.6 percent. From 3-point range, they were 7 of 14 for 50 percent.

In the first half, both teams played even with neither team leading by more than 2 points. There were four ties and seven lead changes.

Lindloff made two free throws for a 36-36 tie. Wendel and Josh Volness each dropped in a pair of free throws to give Crown a 40-36 lead. DeNoyer made a basket to make the score 40-38 for Crown at halftime.

Gregory Heichelbech led MLC with 15 points. DeNoyer added 14, Richard Eckmann had 12 points while Hirsch and Riebe each scored 10 points.
