NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran crushed Cedar Mountain 68-34 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game. It was MVL’s fifth victory in a row.

“It was a nice game for us,” MVL coach Rollin Timm said. “We played together as a team, and I was really happy with our half-court defense.”

Lexi Fischer led the Chargers with 20 points. Maddie Pearson had 19 points and four assists. Emma Nelson added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Paulsen had nine rebounds and three assists. Kalli Kodet and Trista Smith each scored 9 points for CM.

Both teams played relatively even during the second half. MVL kept its good defense and it was able to score enough points to win comfortably. The Chargers implemented a full-court press early in the game and they used it for a majority of the game.

Nicole Porter’s basket late in the game gave MVL its biggest lead at 68-33. Bella Harmoning hit the first of two free throws for the final score.

Abbie Riederer hit two free throws and Emma Nelson made a basket early in the second half. Kodet and Smith dropped in shots between MVL’s scores.

Megan Sandgren and Kate Lorang scored baskets on two plays in row which was the exception to the teams trading baskets.

The contest began with Pearson canning two 3-pointers for a 6-0 advantage. Both squads traded baskets

Sandgren’s basket on a fast-break lay-up cut MVL’s lead to 20-17. That would be as close as the Cougars would get for the rest of the night. Pearson answered with a 3-point shot pushed MVL’s lead to 23-17.

Fischer scored six points and Porter added two free throws for an 8-0 MVL run that closed out the first half for a 44-21 halftime lead.

CM head coach Joel Christianson expressed optimism noting that the Cougars are playing more competitive with each game

MVL (10-4, 6-1) will host Martin County West on Thursday. CM (2-11, 1-7) will host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.
