New Ulm girls roll past Redwood

NEW ULM -- To say that New Ulm was never in any real danger of losing Monday night's nonconference girls' basketball game to Redwood Valley would be an understatement.
With three players in double figures, good passing and solid defense along the way, the Eagles soared to a 78-32 blowout win over the Cardinals at New Ulm High School.
Joey Batt led the way for New Ulm with 20 points, 10 assists and four steals, while Ellie Bute had 14 points and Iyanna Wieland had 12 points and four steals. Also for the Eagles, Nora Windschill added 9 points and four rebounds and Olivia Wick had 8 points, six boards and five blocks.
"I thought we played a really well-balanced game," Wieland said. "We moved the ball really well and we always made the extra pass for the open look all the time. I thought we played well together and it was a really good team win."
Bute, who canned four 3s and all in the second half, agreed with Wieland's team-win assessment.
"I think we just worked really well together and were really focusing on getting other people open," Bute said. "Once we started setting screens for other people, they started setting them for us and we started to get open. Then we'd kick and we all contributed."
Despite starting out slower offensively, New Ulm picked things up after the opening five minutes, getting a jumper from Wick to give the Eagles a double-digit lead, 14-3, and force a Cardinals timeout with 9:40 left in the first half. New Ulm began to press, which led to several takeaways for points in transition and a 25-7 lead after a bucket inside from Windschill, which forced another Cardinals timeout less than four minutes later.
Wieland pushed the lead to 20 out of the timeout after a layup and the Eagles ended up with a 38-15 lead at halftime, with Batt and Wieland leading the way for New Ulm at the break with 12 points.
The Cardinals went on a 6-0 run to start the second half, but it didn't take long for New Ulm to fire up again, going on a 13-3 run to lead 51-24 after Bute drained her third 3 of the night. After Bute hit her fourth 3 to put New Ulm ahead 66-29 later on in the half, Batt found Windschill with a bounce pass inside for the and-one and a 40-point lead with 7:30 left to play.
RECORD WATCH
Batt's 20 points on Monday night put her at 2,052 career points. With just 2 points, she will pass Minnesota Valley Lutheran grad Galen Holzhueter's city record of 2,053 career points, set in 2010.
The Eagles (12-3) host Delano at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
