Chargers top Tigers
SPRINGFIELD — Despite trailing by as much as 11 in the first half, the Minnesota Valley Lutheran girls’ basketball team found its edge in the second half, using an 11-0 run in the second half to help take down Springfield 62-58 on Friday night in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.
Abbie Riederer led the Chargers (9-4, 5-1) with 23 points and five steals.
The freshman guard was key for the Chargers on Friday after turning in one of her better all-around performances of the season. She said that the comeback came down to just basic teamwork.
“It was awesome,” Riederer said of the comeback. “We worked so well together, and we came into the locker room at halftime and we knew we had to work really hard to come back. My teammates all worked together and I think it was really good.”
Emma Nelson also added 9 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers, while Maddie Pearson had 7 points and six assists. Also for MVL, Abby Nelson added 6 points and Lauren Paulsen had 5 points, four assists and three blocks.
Springfield (6-7, 4-4) was led by Sydney Hauger with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Also for the Tigers, Mackenzie Lothert had 11 points and three assists, while Courtney Wendt had 10 points and five rebounds and Meriah Kirchstein added 8 points.
Trailing 52-47 after a Hauger layup with 8:53 left to play, the Chargers still had plenty of time to relax and mount a comeback. And that’s exactly what they did.
The Chargers used an 11-0 run to take a 58-52 lead late, with a 3 by Riederer knotting things up at 52-all and a Pearson-to-Paulsen bucket inside putting the Chargers in front for their first lead of the second half. Hauger broke up the long MVL run with a bucket inside on the other end to have the Tigers down 58-54, but Springfield couldn’t get its shots to fall late, while Riederer and Abby Nelson each hitting a pair of free throws to put MVL up 62-55.
Lothert hit a late 3 with less than a second to play for the final points of the game.
Both squads traded buckets for the most of the first half, but Springfield was the first to break away with a double-digit lead, 28-18, after a corner 3 by Lothert with eight minutes to go until the half. The Tigers upped their lead to 11 shortly after, but MVL climbed back to trail 30-24 after a 3 by Riederer with 4:23 left in the half.
The Chargers added the final points of the first half on a basket by Kaylee Hunter and trailed 39-33 at the break.
A 3 by Riederer and a 3 by Hannah Marzinske tied it up at 41-all in the opening minutes of the second half before the Tigers were able to pull away again after back-to-back buckets in the paint by Megan Ploeger to lead 45-41.
The Chargers created more turnovers in the second half, though, and the Tigers ended up paying for it.
“Just some mental mistakes,” Springfield head coach Dillon Schultz said of the second half. “MVL’s a really disciplined team, they really get after it, they really have a good rotation of girls. We’re playing without Taylor Augustin (junior forward) right now. She’s out with a concussion, undetermined when she’s coming back, so our rotation is a little slim, girls are getting tired. I thought a lot of the defensive breakdowns could be attributed to that and just not moving your feet when you’re tired late. As we wore out, we failed to score the ball and MVL took advantage of that.”
Springfield hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday, while MVL hosts Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.
