Hoffman, Franta lead Greyhounds past Sleepy Eye

NEW ULM -- New Ulm Cathedral edged Sleepy Eye 51-46 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference girls' basketball game. It was the first conference win for Cathedral.
"It was a good win," Cathedral coach Dave Wilfahrt said. "The girls played tough through the whole game."
Lauryn Franca scored 5 of Cathedral's final 6 points to secure the win. She dropped in four free throws and a reverse lay-up over the course of the final 40 seconds of the game.
Franta scored 16 points and Heid Hoffman added 12 points for Cathedral. Shay Ubl added six rebounds while Sarah Mohr and Heidi Hoffman had five rebounds apiece.
Leslie Flores led Sleepy Eye with 14 points and six rebounds. Madison Krueger scored 10 points.
Krueger's two free throws brought Sleepy Eye within one point at 35-34. Franta scored a basket and Emily Schommer weaved through the Indian defense for another hoop. Brittney Dittbenner's two free throws cut the deficit for Sleepy Eye to 40-36.
Hoffman answered with a 3-pointer making it 43-36 Cathedral. Krueger responded with a basket of her own and Dittbenner's shot made it 43-40.
Schommer made two free throws to increase the Greyhound lead to 45-40. Flores responded with two free throws which was followed by Franta and Schommer's heroics. Sleepy Eye did not hold a lead in the second half.
The first half featured Cathedral holding as much as a 6-point advantage. There were two ties and one lead change. Sleepy Eye's final lead was 20-19.
Ubl's two free throws helped Cathedral get the lead back at 21-20. Mohr's layup, a basket and a free throw contributed to the Greyhounds being ahead 26-20.
Sleepy Eye's Macy Schenk scored a basket and Cathedral's Ubl scored on a close-in shot just before the buzzer for a 28-22 halftime lead.
"We had too many turnovers, we missed lay-ups and we just weren't mentally tough tonight," Sleepy Eye head coach Ryan Hulke said.
Cathedral (4-7, 1-5) will play at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Tuesday.
Sleepy Eye (4-7, 0-5) will host Springfield on Tuesday.
