MVL 67, Mankato Loyola 34
MANKATO -- Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Mankato Loyola on Thursday in the first round of the Kwik Trip Holiday Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College.
Jake Kettner led all scorers with 23 points, while Dunwa Omot added 11 points and four assists. Mason Cox had six rebounds for MVL.
MVL will continue in the winner's bracket at 8:30 p.m. on Friday in the north gym of Bethany Lutheran College.
Springfield 100, MLA/C 85
SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield downed Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 100-85 on Thursday in a nonconference boys' basketball game.
Isaac Fink scored 28 points, Decker Scheffler added 27 points, Mitchell Buerkle had 18 points and Ivan Hovland dropped in 10 points for the Tigers.
Sam Paulson of MLA/C scored 24 points and Eli Samuelson added 14 points.
Springfield (6-0) will travel to Minneota on Friday.
WWG 64, Wabasso 40
WABASSO -- Westbrook-Walnut Grove crushed Wabasso on Thursday in a nonconference boys' basketball game.
Brock Rohlik led Wabasso with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals. Colby Wall had 12 points, Tristan Kuehn scored 5 points and Sam Ravenberg had eight rebounds.
Wabasso (2-6, 1-3) will host Springfield (5-0, 3-0) next Friday.
SJA 72, Madelia 48
ST. JAMES -- St. James Area crushed Madelia on Thursday in the first round of the St. James Area Invitational Tournament.
Ja'Sean Glover led the Blackhawks with 12 points and four steals. Logan Anderson added 10 points. Madelia committed 29 turnovers.
Madelia (3-4) will play New Ulm on Friday in the third place game of the SJA Tournament.
Girls' basketball
New Ulm 73,
Columbia Heights 20
MOUND -- New Ulm continued its winning ways by crushing Columbia Heights on Thursday in the first round of the Mound-Westonka Holiday Tournament.
Joey Batt led the Eagles with 24 points and six steals. Iyanna Wieland scored 14 points and she had eight rebounds for New Ulm.
Olivia Wick scored 8 points with five rebounds and two blocks, while Grace Sellner chipped in 7 points off the bench for the Eagles.
New Ulm (9-1) will face Fridley at 3 p.m. on Friday in the second round of the Mound-Westonka Tournament.
Nicollet 67, BLHS 57
NICOLLET -- Nicollet defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday in the first round of the Nicollet Holiday Invitational Tournament.
Grace Dehen scored 20 points for the Raiders. Hayley Selby added 13 points with 12 rebounds while Megan Frutiger and Kendall Robertson each had 10 points. Robertson also had six rebounds.
Nicollet will play New Ulm Cathedral at 3 p.m. on Friday in the second round of the Nicollet Tournament.
SJA 47, Madelia 41
ST. JAMES -- St. James Area defeated Madelia on Thursday in the first round of the St. James Area Invitational Holiday Tournament.
Lillian Maul led the Blackhawks with 11 points and CaleyAnne Clobes added 10 points with six steals. Alayna DeLaCruz had 10 rebounds.
Madelia will face a yet to be determined opponent on Friday in the second round of the SJA Tournament.
Girls' hockey
St. Cloud 4, New Ulm 3
SARTELL -- St. Cloud topped New Ulm 4-3 in girls' hockey action at the Stormin' Sabres Holiday Classic on Thursday in Sartell.
Ally Steffensmeier, Ashtyn Wiltscheck and Alexa Steffl all had a goal for the Eagles, while Mckenna Strong, Molly Scheid and Wiltscheck added an assist each.
Cassie Reed took the loss in the net for New Ulm, saving 21 shots. The Icebreakers outshot the Eagles 25-9.
New Ulm plays Fargo North at noon on Friday in Day 2 tournament action.
