Griebel, Collum, Hovland lead All-Journal defense

2018 All-Journal Defense

Joey Griebel, DL, Cathedral, Sr.

Griebel, an All-Subdistrict player and the most valuable defensive lineman in his Subdistrict this year, had 95 total tackles, 49 solos, two fumble recoveries and five sacks. He finishes his career at Cathedral with 129 tackles.

Colton Collum, LB, MVL, Jr.

Collum had 127 total tackles for the Chargers in ten games this year, along with two sacks and a fumble recovery. A repeat All-District player, Collum was a workhorse for the MVL defense this year that improved to 4-6 overall after a winless 2017 campaign.

Collum’s 127 tackles is fourth all-time for a single season at MVL.

Ivan Hovland, LB, Springfield, Jr.

Hovland was an All-District player this year and had 154 total tackles for the Tigers, 41 solos. Springfield coach Bob Fink said that Hovland has a great nose for the football and is a relentless competitor, a great form tackler and leads by example both on and off the field.

Mason Rummel, Springfield, LB, Jr.

Rummel, a three-year starter at linebacker, made the All-District team this year and had 119 total tackles, 40 solos. He also added nine tackles for a loss. Springfield coach Bob Fink said that Rummel is a tremendous competitor who plays with great intensity every snap. Rummel led the team in rushing yards on the offense this year with 840 yards and was second on the team in total tackles.

McKray Schmidt, LB, GFW, Sr.

Schmidt wrapped up his senior year with 55 solo tackles and 48 assists (103 total) while adding three sacks and 15 tackles for a loss. The senior helped GFW turn its football program around after a 5-5 finish and a playoff win against St. James Area this year.

Curtis Tauer, LB/DE/DT, Springfield, Jr.

Tauer played ten games this year for Springfield and raked in 83 total tackles, 25 solos. Springfield coach Bob Fink said that Tauer is an outstanding two-way player that played through injuries for the majority of the year.

Brody Bolduan, LB, New Ulm, Jr.

Bolduan was a bright spot for the Eagles during a tough season and finished with 135 total tackles, 79 solos. He had five tackles for a loss, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Kyle Tauer, LB & DE, St. Mary’s, Sr.

Tauer led the Knights in total tackles in his final year at St. Mary’s with 84 while piling up 13 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss. Tauer played all nine games this past season for the Knights and also forced a pair of fumbles while recovering a fumble and adding a defensive touchdown.

Avery Northquest, MLB, Nicollet, Jr.

Northquest helped lead the Nicollet defense this year with 95 total tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Northquest currently has 357 tackles, nine fumble recoveries and an interception and has a shot at finishing No. 2 on Nicollet’s career tackles list with a strong senior year.

Northquest also was a letter winner for the Raiders.

Josh Sletta, LB, Madelia, Sr.

Sletta had 56 solo tackles this year for the Blackhawks and was in on 131 tackle assists. He also added nine tackles for a loss this year, two sacks and one interception for the 4-5 Blackhawks in his final year at Madelia.

Alex Hillesheim, DE, Cathedral, Sr.

Hillesheim was named to the All-Subdistrict team this season and had 66 total tackles, 39 solos, two interceptions and three pass deflections. He had three fumble recoveries and five sacks for the Greyhounds in his final season.
