SLEEPY EYE -- Cedar Mountain/Comfrey came out of the first half leading 38-36 and went on a 16-5 scoring run during the first four and a half minutes of the second to make the difference in Tomahawk Conference girls' basketball Thursday night.
Cedar Mountain/Comfrey defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 77-63.
“It is good to keep playing and gain our confidence for the playoffs, let the girls know that every game still counts for us and play well,” CM/C coach Mike Kelly said.
CM/C's Abby Jemmings led with 31 points.
The Cougars’ Jemmings hit an early field goal on an assist coming from Lexi Toll from outside the arc. Jemmings then hit a 3-pointer from way out to put the Cougars up 13-7.
St. Marys’ Madi Mathiowetz hit a deep 3, knotting the game up at 15 after a timeout was called at the 11:23 mark.
The Knights then dominated the middle minutes of the first half, leading 24-17 with 6:50 left to play in the first.
Mallory Helget hit a field goal from outside the paint after Sydney Windschitl had a take away, as the Knights' defense held the Cougars back.
At the 4:27 mark, still in the first half, Cedar Mountain/Comfrey’s Taylor Rose netted consecutive and-ones as the Cougars found their hands again. Jemmings followed with back to back 3-pointers to tie the game up at 35.
The Knights were led by Mathiowetz with 17 points, Windschitl and Helget each tallied 13 points and Cassie Heinrichs netted 12 points.
CM/C’s Taylor Rose had 27 points, Jordan Kevelin put in 9 points and Toll followed with 7 points.
The Knights will host Red Rock Central at 7:30 p.m. on Monday for their final regular season game.
CM/C travels to play at 6 p.m. Friday against Central Minnesota Christian.
