NEW ULM -- Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated New Ulm Cathedral 66-45 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference girls' basketball game.
"We were playing with confidence and playing with energy tonight," MVL head coach Rollin Timm said. He was very pleased with his team's defense and his players made adjustments when necessary, didn't panic and made baskets when needed.
MVL jumped out to an early 11-0 lead. Heidi Hoffman scored and Becca Schwarz hit two free throws to cut MVL's lead to 20-14.
Emma Nelson and Haley Birkholz answered with a basket each to give the Chargers a cushion again at 26-14.
MVL's Maddie Spurgin hit a 3-pointer and Birkholz made a fast-break layup with about two minutes left in the first half.
Jenna Helget scored on a putback for a 33-20 MVL halftime advantage.
Lauryn Franta's 3-pointer brought the Greyhounds within eight points of MVL early in the second half.
Paulsen scored 7 points and Emma Nelson added 2 points as MVL went on a 9-0 run to seal the win.
Abby Nelson scored on an inside basket after Sarah Mohr scored for Cathedral.
Birkholz led MVL with 17 points, Emma Nelson added 15 points with 10 rebounds, Paulsen had 13 points and Spurgin had 10 points. Maddie Pearson had five assists.
Helget scored 13 points for Cathedral and Becca Schwarz added 10 points.
Cathedral was 9-for-11 from the free throw line for 82 percent while MVL was 10 of 14 for 71 percent.
"They're a good, solid team and we knew we had to limit our mistakes," Cathedral head coach Dave Wilfahrt said.
Cathedral had to the momentum at times in the game, but MVL took it back.
MVL (11-12, 6-7) will play at Sleepy Eye St. Mary's (17-4, 9-4) on Monday.
Cathedral (5-17, 2-12) will host Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (13-6, 7-6) on Tuesday.
