NEW ULM — Madi Heiderscheidt couldn’t have chosen a better time to kick things into gear and set the Sleepy Eye girls’ basketball single-season scoring record in the process.

With 32 points from Heiderscheidt, Sleepy Eye defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 74-58 in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action Tuesday night. Heiderscheidt now has 431 points this season, passing Alison Renberg’s previous record of 420 (04-05).

Heiderscheidt also added five assists and five steals.

Sleepy Eye was fortunate to see a much-improved performance in the second half, which led to the big win.

“It’s really exciting, but I think it’s just a small milestone in the grand scheme of things,” Heiderscheidt said of the record. “I’m really looking at bigger things right now. But to get it in a game like that when we were down — and for me to be able to step up and help my team get a win — that was pretty exciting to go along with it.”

In a first half that featured 10 total lead changes, MVL kept Sleepy Eye on its heels for sure, starting off hot and taking a 10-6 lead after a bucket and a pair of free throws by Maddie Spurgin, who had 17 points on the night. Sleepy Eye took a 23-22 lead on a floater by Heiderscheidt with less than six minutes to go in the first half, but the Chargers answered back with back-to-back buckets by Spurgin, one being a 3-pointer, to lead 27-23.

After a bucket inside by McKenzie Cselovszki to give Sleepy Eye a 30-29 lead before the half ended, Hannah Marzinske beat the buzzer inside on the other end to give MVL a 31-30 lead at halftime.

MVL started the second half off well with a 6-0 run to lead 37-30, but things turned ugly in a hurry for the Chargers. Sleepy Eye began to change up its defense, which created plenty of turnovers for fast-break points, and the Indians went on a 29-4 run to lead 59-41 with less than ten minutes to go.

An and-one and a bucket inside by Lauren Paulsen stopped the run, giving MVL some of its momentum back. After a jumper by Spurgin, MVL cut the deficit back down to 9, but Sleepy Eye went on a 9-0 run after to bring its lead up to 68-50.

MVL was never able to put enough together to get closer than 14 after that run by the Indians.

“Very pleased with the effort of the girls,” MVL coach Rollin Timm said of his squad. “After playing four games without a practice, to see them come out and play like they did tonight — that’s what we know we can do, we’ve just got to do it for a whole game.”

Paulsen had 8 points and six steals for the Chargers, while Abby Nelson, Sarah Dinse, Haley Birkholz and Marzinske each added 6 points. Birkholz also had four steals.

Sleepy Eye’s Sarah Ibarra added 10 points and four assists, while Brianna Polesky had 10 points and five steals. Cselovszki had 8 points and 10 boards.

Sleepy Eye (15-4, 9-2) and play at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Friday.

MVL (9-11, 4-6) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.
